New Art Exchange is proud to present Arun Ghosh, a leading light in UK’s Indo Jazz scene. His composition, A South Asian Suite, is a compelling fusion of melody, rhythm, emotion and spirit. Ghosh performs clarinet alongside other accomplished musicians including MOBO Award winning pianist, Zoe Rahman. Merging jazz with South Asian folk traditions, the result is complex multi-layered piece and a sentimental and perceptive interpretation of diverse South Asian cultures.
This show is a celebration of the highly anticipated release of the A South Asian Suite album. The performance, which has developed as a piece of live music since 2010, takes inspiration from the many environments it has toured. The second half of the show comprises of pieces from Ghosh's acclaimed albums Northern Namaste and Primal Odyssey, plus euphoric live favourites.
Born in Calcutta and raised in Manchester, Arun Ghosh combines his unique understandings of British and South Asian cultures through music. The six movement suite is inspired by the music, landscape and peoples of Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Whilst Mountain Song atmospherically conjures the imposing landscape of Nepal, River Song is inspired by a folk tune traditionally sung by fishermen in Bangladesh. Rather than re-creating the distinct musical styles of other cultures, Ghosh presents his own personal response intertwining memories, feelings, and the character of a place. Ghosh was equally inspired by his experience of living in Britain and how this enabled him to embrace diverse cultures with greater freedom.
