Meet the band : Buzzard Rock & Blues
There’s not much you could teach a band like Buzzard. They are a band with a wealth of experience and it would be fair to say that they’ve clocked-up some heavy mileage since playing in various bands and as individual musicians spanning four decades. The band, Andy Kealey, (guitar/vocals), Jim (Jimbo) Price, (bass/vocals) and Keith White, (drums/vocals) play a mixture of classic rock and blues tunes which these days, apart from old rock stalwarts and connoisseurs keeping it all alive, time has almost forgotten about.
Andy and Keith both played with the infamous Nottingham band ‘Dawn Trader’ during the 1980’s earning high acclaim throughout the Midlands and often collaborated with ex -Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden. They both went on to form ‘ABK’, (Andy, Boris & Keith), a blues /rock band not far removed from their present day incarnation. Playing regular weekly slots in Nottingham during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s and boasting a ‘packed house’ every time.
More recently though, having teamed up with old friend Jim Price, (a local ‘lad’ from nearby Spondon) they have continued with what they do best and when you see them play you can feel their mutual respect for one another through the endless comical banter they produce in between each song.
Some Buzzard shows also feature special guest musicians giving the band the opportunity to treat their regulars to even more spectacular feats.
Buzzard play powerful rock & blues and their live sound is driven in the most simplistic form. Tonight I’m seeing them play live at the last band night at ‘The Steamboat Inn’ down at Trent Lock. Andy kicks off the vocal proceedings with Buzzard’s version of The Box Tops’ ‘The Letter’. His guitar wizardry is truly brilliant but he has the knack of making it look so effortless in the same style reminiscent of Clapton, Beck and Gilmour.
The night continues and we are treated to tunes originally played by the late Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix, including the latters ‘Hey Joe’. The band joke about ‘speeding’ up their version of ZZ Top’s ‘Just Got Paid’ as it was played too slow the previous night. During tonight’s show, a guest joins the band straight out of the audience and plays harmonica with them for a slow blues jam as if he’d done it hundred times before. It’s these unexpected events that make the Buzzard shows truly remarkable.
The enthusiastic followers never want them to stop, but all good things must come to an end and they round - up the night beautifully by playing Thin Lizzy’s early anthem ‘Whisky in the Jar’.
Buzzard are available to play pubs and clubs in the East Midlands area, also special events and parties.
