25 June - Carnival and Show Day

The day begins with the Road Parade (sponsored by ESP (European, Sports and Prestige) Cars (www.esp-cars.com) which assembles at Sheet Stores Industrial Estate (off Fields Farm Road) and gets on its way at 1100 hours, turns right at Railway Station along Tamworth Road, passes through the town centre to The Green where it will turn left up Derby Road and then left along Wilsthorpe Road to West Park, hopefully arriving around between 1230 and 1300 hours. The bands taking part in the Road Parade include Long Eaton’s own carnival band, The Long Eaton Militaires, The Breaston Highlanders, which like the carnival is celebrating its 80th anniversary, The Newtown Youth Marching Band (coming all the way from Wales), Voll Freud (Long Eaton Militaires’ twin band paying a special visit from Essen, Germany), the Nottingham Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Brigade Band and last by no means least a band from one of our local schools, Long Eaton School Steel Band.

The free to enter showground opens at 12 noon and full programmes of entertainment are available to everyone free of charge in Arena 1, Arena 2, Music Marquee and Performance Marquee.

The PERFORMANCE MARQUEE’s programme (start off at 1230 hours) includes Roo Walker, Philippa Hanna, Empire Nation, Hanna Brown and Jessica Towle. Roo Walker was picked from over 20,000 entrants by BBC New Talent, went on to become a finalist in the new songwriters’ competition in 2008 and since then has been making a name for himself as one of the most gifted and comedic musical performers in the UK - his debut EP “Positive Music” has flown off the shelves. Philippa Hanna performs around the globe and is one of UK’s brightest talents taking in over 100 performances each year since the launch of “Watching Me” in 2007; and she has kicked off 2011 with an appearance on BBC1’s Songs of Praise, a jam-packed UK tour schedule and a brand new mini-album “Out of the Blue”. Empire Nation, although a relatively recent entrant onto the UK music scene, has had radio play in over 50 countries, a number of high profile gigs, concerts and festivals, and its first EP received 8/10 in review by Cross Rhythms, and debut album “Airtight” received 8/10. Also, in the Performance Marquee, you can view the results of an art competition commemorating the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible which is being judged by members of the Long Eaton All Media Art Club.

The afternoon’s entertainment in ARENA 1, ARENA 2 and MUSIC MARQUEE commences after the The Member of Parliament for Erewash, Jessica Lee, has performed the opening ceremony and His Worship The Mayor of the Borough of Erewash, Councillor Kevin Miller, has presented the Road Parade awards. However, in Arena 1, in the interval between the Road Parade arrival and the presentation of the Road Parade awards is the must-be-seen demonstration of dare-devil antics on cycles performed by Joe Oakley who is a member of a winning trials display and rider training team, a UCI trials world champion, semi-finalist in BBC1’s Britain’s Got Talent and Long Eaton’s Got Talent winner. Joe will be giving demonstrations on the showground throughout the afternoon,

In order of appearance, giving displays in ARENA 1 are The Newtown Youth Marching Band, Dancing Feet School of Dance, Long Eaton Militaires, Voll Freud Band, Breaston Highlanders, Long Eaton Squadron of Air Training Corps and VIBEZ Danceworks followed by a “Gun Run” by the Long Eaton Squadron of the Air Training Corps. To finalize the afternoon’s entertainment in the arena there will be a Zumba Fitness Demonstration with the opportunity for audience participation so save some of your energy, get to Arena 1 and enjoy yourselves.

ARENA 2 is where you can watch displays (in order of appearance) by Dance Doctors, Razzamataz, Dancing Feet School of Dance, IBC School of Dance, Dance Doctors, Long Eaton Judo Club and Arabesque Academy.

There’s music to suit all tastes in the MUSIC MARQUEE where Acoustic Union starts off the afternoon’s programme with a wide variety of music which should suit even the most discerning listener, followed by soloists Lucy Smith and Emily Gent (finalists in Long Eaton’s Got Talent) and Hayden Fletcher (member of Erewash Musical Society and Long Eaton Young Performers). Appearing next, with drama and singing, is Razzamataz (first appearance at the carnival) after which Lucy, Emily and Hayden will appear again. Next on the stage, and appearing for the first time at the carnival, is The Grand Central Chorus and, before the curtain falls on the afternoon’s entertainment, Acoustic Union will, once again, provide a selection of music to suit all tastes so do frequent the Music Marquee where you will find a good afternoon of musical entertainment.

In addition to all the programmed entertainment there is The Long Eaton Community Carnival Association’s Marquee housing stalls of all kinds including The Long Eaton Fairground Model Show. Out and about you will also find a Craft Fair, a Model Boat Show by the committee of Nottingham Model Boat Society, miniature railway rides by Erewash Valley Model Engineering Society, Rob Roy Wooden Toys with demonstration, in addition to Electric Rainbow’s boating lake, crazy golf, gladiator game and slide. There will also be Trent Barton buses, vintage cars, and outdoor stalls which give the flavour of what happens in local community groups and businesses and lots more including Armstrong’s Funfair in the Events Field.
