North-Eastern anarcho-poppers Martha and Milky Wimpshake head out on tour

Lookout! Inter-generational punk explosion coming to a town near you!

Two of the North-East's finest bands have teamed up for a joint tour of the UK this April. Milky Wimpshake and Martha may be from different generations of indiepop but are bonded by their left-wing political beliefs, DIY ethics and the kind of punk pop that makes lyrics about that kind of stuff seem like the most joyous thing in the world.

Durham's Martha will be playing songs from their critically acclaimed album Courting Strong as well as from their debut EP, newly re-issued on 10" by Tuff Enuff Records.

Milky Wimpshake, joined by Sophie Evans of Glasgow's Life Model, will be performing songs taken from their upcoming album of duets Encore, Un Effort (due out on 20 April), already reviewed in glowing terms by Uncut and NME.

Martha

Hailing from Pity Me near Durham, vegan straight-edgers MARTHA released their debut album Courting Strong via Fortuna POP! last year. Providing energetic, impassioned pop punk, Martha are informed by 90s indie rock and Scandinavian anarcho noir. The album, produced by MJ from Hookworms, is laden with harmonies and interchangeable vocals whilst still retaining the energy and excitement of the band’s live shows.

In 2014 Courting Strong was included as one of NPR's favourite albums of the year. The single “Sleeping Beauty” recently won Steve Lamacq's Rebel Playlist vote on BBC 6music by an overwhelming majority and the NME ran an exclusive premiere of their "Sleeping Beauty" Mixtape, featuring a host of their DIY punk favourites.

"Up in Durham, Martha are a perfect example of the (DIY) culture's independent, socially conscious values: this year they released their excellent debut album, 'Courting Strong' (produced by Hookworms' MJ), which was powered by anarchy, veganism and Irn Bru, according to their Bandcamp.... the single 'Sleeping Beauty'... tackles a serious subject (the gendered socialisation of children) with a sweet yelp." NME

“One of Britain's best rock bands” - NPR.org

“Martha are one of the most thrilling and likeable bands to emerge from the North East in god knows how many years” - Drownedinsound.com

“One of the best DIY pop albums of the year” - The Independent

Milky Wimpshake

Milky Wimpshake return with their brand new album, Encore, Un Effort, of melodic punk indie-pop, splattered with Pete Dale’s wry lyrics and simple, direct guitar riffs. The album features several duets with Sophie Evans, who sings on over half the songs, adding both a sweetness and a sassyness to their sound. These duets show different sides to relationships from shyness to bickering and from lust to indifference.

Milky Wimpshake were formed by Pete in 1993 with Christine Rowe joining the band on bass in early 1994. A number of drummers have appeared over the course of half a dozen LPs, but the latest drummer Mike Walsh will hopefully be a permanent addition. The newest member of the band, Sophie Evans, wasn’t even born when the band played their first gig but she is not the only one who has grown up coming to Milky Wimpshake shows: the band has a small but enthusiastic cult following.

"Simple, yet deftly hewn, inhabiting the space between classic indie moves and punk-pop… a welcome return." Uncut

"jangly, malcontent indie-pop with a serrated punk edge." NME
