Some Details...

On July 26th Massar Egbari, the biggest contemporary rock band in Egypt (and the Middle East) will be giving a performance at Nottingham's New Art Exchange. This is quite a steal; the day before they are performing on Trafalgar Square in London as part of the Shubbak Festival.

Since the recent upheaval in Egypt a new generation of bands have broken through, modernising the sound of Egyptian rock music. Massar Egbari have been at the forefront of this new scene, and their music reflects the changing social conditions experienced in Egypt. Their lyrics speak critically with an irreverent humour, satirising the conditions they find, but most of all reflecting the aspirations of Egypt’s younger generations for change.

They are joined by UK musical adventurers the Dead Rat Orchestra whose vibrant non-traditionalist approach to combining folk and experimental music has gained them recognition as one of the UK's most innovative ensembles. Their work has been performed, installed and experienced across Europe, North America and the Middle East, and their soundtracks have featured on BBC Television and at Tate Modern, and they have composed works for performance by the London Contemporary Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia and the Ukranian Conservertoire, and collaborated with The Pitt Rivers Museum.
