OPEN DAY ~ Free Family Event
Saturday 7 August 2010, 12pm to 4pm
The Theatre Royal Nottingham will be opening its doors on Saturday 7 August with a chance for the public to go behind the scenes, win theatre tickets and take part in and see a wide range of colourful performance events on every foyer level.
The Open Day will start at 12noon and finish at 4pm, and the public will have access not only to the foyers and backstage areas of the Theatre Royal, but also for the very first time will get a unique chance to go on the Royal Concert Hall platform stage.
Backstage Tours will run every 20 minutes from the stalls foyer, lead by actors from the theatre’s Royal Company. Participants on each of these free tours will go through the auditorium and then up onto the Theatre Royal stage which will be set for the classic thriller Murder With Love. The tour will then take them through the wings to the scenery loading bay, onto the Royal Concert Hall stage, and then back to the Dress Circle foyer via stage door and the principal dressing room corridor.
* The Royal Concert Hall stage is being used for the first time for an Open Day event – the stage will be lit as for a performance, with local jazz pianist Louis Resnick playing live and a microphone in the spotlight. All participants on this free backstage tour will have their own unique opportunity to shine!
* Last tour will go out at 3.30pm
* Every participant on the tour will have a chance to win a pair of tickets to see the opening night of a Theatre Royal production of their choice within the forthcoming Autumn season, by taking part in our murder mystery themed backstage quiz
* Wheelchair and sign language interpreted tours are scheduled for 1.30pm and 2.30pm respectively. Places for these popular access tours can be booked in advance by contacting Emily Noakes on 0115 989 5609
Outside entertainments:
· Street dance demonstrations by local students from Radford’s Take 1 Studios (www.take1studios.co.uk)
* Victor Scott, junk percussion artist, will have his amazing array of recycled ‘instruments’ available for people to try (www.junk4funk.co.uk)
* Local artist Stephen Jon will be astonishing visitors with his extraordinary and elaborate street theatre costume characters
* Balloonatic balloon artists will be decorating people with incredible balloon hats, costumes, toys and sculptures (www.foolsparadise.co.uk/fools07html/balloonatics.html)
Stalls Foyer area:
* Free face-painting (www.wowlookatme.co.uk)
* Classical guitarist Nick Fletcher will be performing at various times throughout the day
* Ezekial Bone, our resident theatre tour guide, will be MC for the day
* Madge Spencer, Caribbean Potter and Storyteller, will be inviting children and families to work with clay and listen to her many fascinating stories
* Café bar will be open for meals, snacks and hot and cold drinks
Dress Circle Foyer area:
* Friends of the Royal Centre information stand staffed by local volunteers from the Friends scheme
* Widow Twankey, aka local actor Dan Hogarth, offering visitors a chance to win a family ticket to see this year’s star-studded pantomime Aladdin
* A real Aladdin’s Cave, with a selection of pantomime props and costumes to touch and try on
* The Usual Suspects, a Theatre Royal staff display
* Dress Circle Bar open for hot and cold drinks
Upper Circle Foyer area:
* A relaxing area for families to enjoy with beanbags for the children and family entertainment regularly scheduled throughout the afternoon, including
* Regular storytelling performances from our Royal Company storytellers
* Performances of ‘The Marvellous Mouse Circus’, a delightful family puppet show commissioned just for our Open Day by puppeteer Cath Connolly.
