The genius that is Phil Beer, the dazzling multi instrumentalist with Show of Hands, will take his “folk and roll” band on the road for six special gigs this spring.
A man used to juggling musical hats, he is already on a hectic 29-date solo UK tour and making appearances with the Bully Wee Band. But March sees the Exeter-based musician showcasing one of his favourite line-ups – the popular Phil Beer Band.
Described by The Guardian as “where Steve Earle and Richard Thompson collide”, the band performs a unique blend of “folk and roll”, trawled from Phil’s treasure trove of traditional tunes and American country rock.
The current line-up comprises a sextet of top flight musicians - Phil on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and vocals; Gareth Turner (Little Johnny England) on melodeons, Steve Crickett, who was in Arizona Smoke Revue with Beer, on drums; Nick Quarmby of Colvin Quarmby (bass/vocals), Olivia Dunn (Mad Dog MaCree) on fiddles and Emily Slade on guitars and vocals.
Not content with touring all over the UK and beyond with his Show of Hands partner Steve Knightley for the past 21 years, and selling out the Royal Albert Hall four times, ever-busy Phil got his popular line-up back on the road in 2014 after a three year absence.
The show offers a fast, frenetic, “feelgood” evening with a generous helping of humour. The tour will kick off at Somerset’s Taunton Brewhouse on March 2 with further gigs in County Durham, Nottingham, Wiltshire, Kent and ending at Hailsham Pavilion in East Sussex.
Says Phil: “It will be a lively cocktail of folk, rock, country and blues. There will be a liberal nose of new material and our latest live album will be available, recorded during the 2011 tour.” Hear the band’s version of Blind Willie Johnson’s I Can’t Keep from Crying Sometimes.
