Fully staged by set designer Will Bowen, and directed by Ellen Kent, each production is played out within an amphitheatre setting, with music performed by the Chisinau National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus. Turandot Giacomo Puccini Tue 17 Feb 7.30pm The splendour of ancient China is the setting for the story of the heartless Turandot, princess of Peking, and Calaf, the one man who can solve her deadly riddles and melt the ice in her heart. The Terracotta Army gazes down on this epic production performed by international soloists, in celebration of Luciano Pavarotti’s life and highlighting the unforgettable aria Nessun Dorma, Sung in Italian with English surtitles ©CASA Ricordi BMG Ricordi S.p.A. MILAN Aida Giuseppe Verdi Wed 18 & Thu 19 Feb 7.30pm The splendour of Egypt is set against the grandeur of the Colosseum of Rome in this tragic love story of war, jealousy and revenge. Aida is brought to life in a production featuring some of the greatest pieces of music Verdi ever wrote including the well known arias Celeste Aida, Ritorna Vincitor and the soaring chorus piece the Triumphal March. Ellen Kent’s direction is influenced by the ancient Greek dramas of Euripides. Sung in Italian with English surtitles Carmen Georges Bizet Fri 20 & Sat 21 Feb 7.30pm Carmen as you have never seen it before is staged in a bullring for a new spectacular twist to Bizet’s famous and seductive opera. Guest starring international flamenco dancer Sam Quy* - as seen at the Royal Opera House - accompanied by the well-known Spanish flamenco singer Fernando de Sevilla*, the Theatre Royal is transformed into a Spanish carnival setting for this must see performance.
