Beethoven: Fidelio Overture
Brahms: Violin Concerto
Dvorak: Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’

Beethoven was a ground-breaking composer of the overture, nowhere more so than in his compact prelude to his opera, Fidelio. On a grander scale, Brahms’s epic Violin Concerto was originally written for the great virtuoso of his day, Joachim, and is a real test of any violinist’s technique and stamina. Our soloist, the exciting young Ukrainian, Valeriy Sokolov, has both in abundance and will really blow you away with his thrilling, spontaneous playing.

Dvorak completed his ‘New World’ Symphony in 1893 having emigrated to America the previous year. Immediately taken by the music of the new country he absorbed the music of Negro spirituals and native Americans into his greatest Symphony. The spirit of plantation songs is clearest in the famous slow movement, but Dvorak also finds plenty of inspiration in America’s wide open spaces whose scale and spectacle he captures unforgettably in the big tunes of his most popular work.
