Halle at Theatre Royal & Royal Concert HallDate: Sun 31st Jan Time: 19:30 Markus Stenz conductor Susan Gritton soprano Katerina Karneus mezzo-soprano Hallé Choir Colin Matthews Crossing the Alps Mahler Symphony No.2 'Resurrection' The Hallé’s Principal Guest Conductor begins our first concert in 2010 with a new Hallé commission from its Associate Composer, Colin Matthews. Written for unaccompanied voices, Crossing the Alps is a powerful showcase for the Hallé’s acclaimed choir and a fascinating prelude to Mahler’s massive Second Symphony. Six years in the making, the ‘Resurrection’ Symphony is an all-embracing vision of life, death and what lies beyond. Written for vast orchestral forces, including large choir and two soloists this is a truly earth-shaking experience. Mahler conceived of the symphony as a journey from dark and anguished struggles, through fond memories of lost loved ones, to a cataclysmic day of reckoning. Finally, led by his two soloists (in this case leading British soprano, Susan Gritton, and former winner of the BBC’s Cardiff Singer of the Year Competition, mezzo Katarina Karneus), Mahler storms the heavens with his most uplifting and spectacular finale. Free pre-concert talk, 6.30pm in the auditorium: Colin Matthews on his new work, Crossing the Alps Estimated finishing time 9.10pm Please note that there is no interval in this concert.
