Nottingham Youth Orchestra at Theatre Royal & Royal Concert HallDate: Sat 3rd Mar Time: 19:30 Nottingham Youth Orchestra and Nottingham Youth Jazz Orchestra present Journey Through Olympic Cities at the RCH on March 3rd at 7.30pm. The concert takes an audio-visual route through the history of the modern Olympics. Hosted by Des Coleman and being recorded by BBC Radio Nottingham the concert is the only large event taking place in Notts for the BBC/Making Music weekend, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. It features young, talented musicians playing a varied programme of music ( Zorba, Chariots of Fire, Barcelona, Finlandia, Nessun Dorma, Cabaret and more) which should appeal to a wide range of concert goers. It features the premiere of a piece especially written for the concert as part of a composition competition. Des will present the winner, 17 year old Coleman Chan, with his prize. There is a recorded interview with one of Nottingham's Olympic hopefuls ( Becky Downie-gymnast) and one Paralympic hopeful will be on stage to be interviewed by Des(Simon Wilson-fencing), both of them Notts Shining Stars. We also have John Whetton, an Olympic athlete from the past who will talk to Des about his experiences. There will be displays in the foyer of sport related work from local schools who have been taking part in the Get Set Olympic programme, which is the London 2012 education programme. The Nottingham Youth Orchestra prides itself on its concerts at the Royal Concert Hall enabling talented local players from 3 counties to experience the opportunity of playing in such a prestigious venue. By commissioning new works by young composers and inviting young soloists to perform the NYO strives to keep youth music alive in Nottinghamshire.
