I have also attached the flyer. Nottingham Youth Orchestra's spring concert features Elgar's Enigma Variations, one of the most popular works in the classical repertoire. The piece was dedicated "to my friends pictured within", each characterisation intending to represent the mood of the person themselves. The enigma alluded to was never publicly disclosed and has been the subject of endless speculation over the years. Chabrier's Joyeuse Marche, a syncopated march full of verve, delightful humour and bold and colourful innovations, contrasts with the darker theme of Dvorak's tone poem, The Water Goblin. Dvorak's piece is based on a tale from Czech folklore and recounts a story of obsessive love and supernatural beings, which has a violent and gruesome ending. The deceptively jaunty opening theme turns menacing and periods of warmth and serenity are countered by the insistent malevolence of the goblin's theme. We are pleased to welcome Chris George as our guest conductor. Chris was leader of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and is currently engaged in teaching and conducting. He has been coaching the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and, as well as private tuition, teaches violin at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
