Nottingham Harmonic Choir: War Requiem & Lark at Theatre Royal & Royal Concert HallDate: Thur 1st Nov Time: 15:00 ottingham Harmonic Choir in association with Royal British Legion World War 1 Armistice Centenary Concert To commemorate the end of the First World War, Nottingham Harmonic Choir present two contrasting, powerful and poignant works of the twentieth century repertoire. The momentous War Requiem, the most profound statement of Benjamin Britten’s pacifist convictions, still has the power to move us almost 60 years after its first performance. With vocal lines reflecting the anguish of war, and orchestrally created sounds of firing guns and cannon, the tension is palpable, and is a cry from the heart. Contrast this with the clarity and beauty of Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending, written as the war began, evoking the sense of freedom for which millions would willingly give their lives. Programme as follows… Britten War Requiem Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Rachel Nicholls Soprano Daniel Norman Tenor Benedict Nelson Baritone Braimah Kanneh-Mason Violin Southwell Minster Girls’ Choir Orchestra da Camera Richard Laing Conductor Simon Hogan Organist Members of the Kanneh-Mason family are also performing at this concert. In a poignant tribute to the Nottingham WW1 hero serviceman, Captain Albert Ball, Braimah Kanneh-Mason with his sister Jeneba , finalist in the 2018 BBC Young Musician of the Year keyboard category, will accompany him in a performance of Dvorak’s Humoresque. This was Albert’s favourite piece and Braimah will play it on the late serviceman’s violin, which has been specially restored for the occasion. Born and raised in Lenton , Nottingham, Albert Ball joined the Sherwood Foresters when World War 1 began, transferring to the Royal Flying Corps a year later. At the time of his death in May 1917 Albert was the UK’s leading flying ace, with over 40 combat successes for which he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
