Three French composers feature in this spring concert. Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No.3 is well known as The ‘Organ Symphony’. Composed in 1886 when he was at the height of his career as a composer and as a famous organist, he said of this work, ‘I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished I will never achieve again.’ Ravel, born in the later part of the nineteenth century, was a pupil of Saint-Saëns’s pupil and friend, Fauré. Intrigued by the waltz genre, Ravel’s Valses Nobles et Sentimentales is influenced by Schubert piano works, although the musical style is considered French rather than Viennese, with a variety of contrasting moods. The ballet suite from Massenet’s Le Cid is a popular concert piece which includes dances from different regions of Spain. The 'Infernal Dance' really made the audience jump when it exploded into life and the orchestral colours were so bright and vivid that sensory overload was threatened. But it was perhaps the hushed moments that impressed the most, the NYO's subtle control of dynamics creating an atmospheric sound-world full of light and shade.'
