at Theatre Royal & Royal Concert HallDate: Tue 18th Nov Time: 19:30 André de Ridder conductor Ruth Palmer violin Beethoven Overture: Coriolan Barber: Violin Concerto Barber: Adagio for Strings Beethoven: Symphony No.5 With its lush, lyrical opening and full-throttle finale, Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto is perfectly suited to Ruth Palmer, Classical BRIT award-winner in 2007, whose expressive, physical performances have made her one of the hottest young talents today. Barber’s famous Adagio for Strings offers a poignant contrast. Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture was written for a friend’s now-forgotten tragic play but the drama lives on in this vivid portrait of the stern warrior hero. The Novelist E M Forster described Beethoven’s 5th Symphony as ‘the most sublime noise that has ever penetrated into the ear of man’ and it’s hard to disagree. Robust and reckless, it never lets go its grip, from the fateful opening four notes to the joyful abandon of the finale. “Strident, shocking, imperious and beautiful, this was a riveting performance” – The Independent on Sunday on Ruth Palmer “Palmer’s bow has a demonic edge and her tone is so sweatily intense that one cannot turn away” – The Times Free pre-concert talk, 6.30pm in the auditorium: Ruth Palmer in converstaion about Barber's Violin Concerto Estimated finishing time 9.20pm For more information and clips of the music in this concert please visit: www.nottinghamclassics.org.uk/viva1 Theatre Royal & Royal Concert HallTheatre SquareNottingham Nottinghamshire NG1 5ND (more) Would you like to see more information about Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall?
