Sir Mark Elder conductor Alina Pogostkina violin Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto Nielsen: Symphony No.5 First performed in 1910, the Tallis Fantasia was Vaughan Williams’ breakthrough piece. Written originally for Gloucester Cathedral, it deploys a three-part string orchestra to spine-tingling effect. Just 12 years later, the Danish composer, Carl Nielsen, composed his 5th Symphony, although this searing post-war work reflects a very different world. Nielsen said it was driven by ‘the division of dark and light, the battle between evil and good’ and there are few pieces to match its potent mix of brooding atmosphere and volatile outbursts. Alina Pogostkina really captured the audience’s heart when she performed in Nottingham two years ago so we’re thrilled that she’s back this season to perform one of the titans of the violin repertoire. Amazingly, Tchaikovsky dashed off the whole concerto in just a month but the result was a triumph for both soloist and orchestra with fabulous, big-boned melodies and a dancing, edge-of-the-seat finale Free pre-concert talk, 6.30pm in the auditorium: Sir Mark Elder on Nielsen's 5th Symphony Estimated finishing time 9.30pm For more information and clips of the music in this concert please visit: www.nottinghamclassics.org.uk/halle2 Theatre Royal & Royal Concert HallTheatre SquareNottingham Nottinghamshire NG1 5ND (more) Would you like to see more information about Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall?
