An exciting series of Autumn concerts have been announced by the Gate to Southwell Festival. All the concerts will be held at the HopBarn, a newly converted performance venue off Upton Road, Southwell. The first concert is on Monday 26th September and will feature Connla an exciting new Irish band with strong traditional roots as well as influences from across the globe. Their sensitive and innovative arrangements of traditional and modern folk songs and tunes have earned them praise across the folk community. Having met whilst studying Music at Ulster University, they quickly began performing together and developing friendships.
They hail from the cities of Armagh and Derry: Ciara McCafferty (vocals), Ciaran Carlin (whistles) and Paul Starrett (guitar) are familiar faces on the local music scene, and are joined by Armagh siblings Emer and Conor Mallon on harp and uilleann pipes.
“Consider this your early warning system....there is something serious on the horizon and that creative storm is Connla .” Irish Music Magazine
“Connla create sensitive arrangements which, whilst steeped in the tradition, have a strong creative core that makes their music sound, fresh, exciting and engaging” Folk Radio UK.
Future concerts scheduled will feature American singer songwriter Chip Taylor, the composer of ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Angel of the Morning’ accompanied by Van Morrison’s guitarist John Platania on October 9th and Sheesham & Lotus and Son an old-time quirky American trio on November 1st. The final concert offers the chance to see Novia Scotia based, James Hill, widely regarded as the best ukulele player in the world, accompanied by his wife Anne Janelle, a classically trained cellist
